Amino Acid - L-Alanine


L-Alanine

A bit more of a rarity this - those of you searching for the amino acid L-Alanine. Firstly, why have you come to search for it (L-Alanine)? Is it a reference made amongst ketogenic diet info? Or, have you simply stumbled upon this page searching for Beta-Alanine (which appears in almost every supplement stack nowadays)?

First, why would L-Alanine be mentioned amongst the ketogenic diet fraternity (or, more commonly, not mentioned)? Well, when the muscles have reached a state of energy depletion (through a restricted carb intake, or ,an aerobic exercise programme without enough carbohydrate to facilitate the fat-burn process), L-Alanine is transported to the liver for the relatively inefficient conversion to carbohydrate (in the simplified form of glucose). So, the human body converts lean MUSCLE tissue in order for the burn process to take place - not quite what you wanted (unless you're deliberately trying to lose lean body mass - I'm aiming this at you endurance cyclists!). This process is known as the Glucose Alanine Chain.

Next, Beta-Alanine. Remember, most names have typically derived their name from another language (most anatomy and biochemistry words from Greek or Latin, although numerical names are now often used - the Greek derived word is like us measuring in inches rather than cm). 'Beta' simply means 'B', notifying it's part of the 'B' Amino Acids, which have a different molecular bond ('B' denoting the position of the carbon bond).
